KUALA LUMPUR: Gombak MP Azmin Ali has urged Defence Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to come clean about his alleged secret meeting with Israeli counterpart Ehud Barak in Paris last year.
“He and deputy Umno president (Muhyiddin Yassin), who drew in the largest number of votes in the Umno polls, met the chief Zionist Barak during the Paris Air Show. We don’t know why this meeting was held in secret.
“I want to ask him the reason for his meeting. Was it to do with Apco?
“I want the defence minister and Umno deputy president to come into this House and explain Umno’s motive for meeting the Zionist at the Paris Air Show. Don’t deceive the Malays… don’t lie to the officers and don’t twist the facts,” he said in parliament.
He said Zahid’s secret meeting was different from the open conference between Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim and US deputy defence secretary Paul Wolfowitz five years ago.
Responding to Umno’s accusation that Anwar was an agent of the Jews because of his ties with Wolfowitz, Azmin said: “They are old friends from the days Wolfowitz was an ambassador to Indonesia.
“Permatang Pauh’s friendship does not jeopardise Malayness or the strength of his faith. He uses the friendship to stress his stand to Washington.”
Azmin also showed a photograph of a meeting he attended, at Pentagon, in the company of several generals, saying that he wanted to go on record with the trip.
“I am showing you all this photo so that Umno won’t use this to spin lies in the Malay villages,” he said.
