Malaysia wins first ever medal in table tennis

NEW DELHI: Malaysia won its first ever Commonwealth Games medal in table tennis after defeating England 3-2 in the bronze medal playoff in the team competition at the Yamuna Sports Complex here today.

Beh Lee Wei put Malaysia ahead with a 8-11, 11-2, 11-13, 13-11, 11-9 victory against Kelly Sibley in the first match.

Thereafter Ng Sock Khim defeated Joanna Parker in 7-11, 11-6, 11-7, 10-12,11-9 but England took the next when Hanna Hicks beat Fan Xiao Jun 12-10, 13-11,12-10.

Parker later recovered from her earlier defeat to level the tie when she defeated Beh 11-7, 11-4, 12-10 to set the stage for a decider between Sibley and Ng.

Ng saw out the match 11-7, 9-11, 11-9, 7-11, 11-8 to give victory for Malaysia.

Malaysian table tennis team leader Soong Poh Wah, when contacted, said all players had fought well and hard in the very tight match.

"We took part in Manchester and Melbourne but did not get any medals, thus we are happy this time around we managed to achieve our target in contributing a medal for the country," he said.

On the first ever medal table tennis in the Commonwealth Games Ng, said: "We are very excited to win this bronze medal. Thanks to my coach, parents and God.”

She said the team became overconfident after winning the first two matches and we were very down when losing the third and fourth matches.

"The one thing that was in our minds was that we had to win the last match.

"It is a great feeling for us to win this together, because we have been playing together for the last 10 years," she added.
