DENVER: The Australian twin who survived a joint suicide bid with her sister in the US state of Colorado last week has been discharged from hospital, a spokeswoman said today.

Candice Hermeler had spent over a week in a local hospital after shooting herself in the head at a firing range east of Denver last Monday along with her sister Kristin, who shot herself dead.

Swedish Medical Center spokeswoman Karen Prestia gave no details of where the surviving 29-year-old – whose parents flew from Australia to be at her bedside – has gone.

While the exact motive of the suicide pact is still unknown, facts about the twins' interest in the 1999 Columbine High School massacre in nearby Littleton have emerged.

Kristin Hermeler wrote letters 11 years ago to a schoolmate of Columbine shooters Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, disclosing how she had been "victimised" as a student, like the two Columbine killers.

Police found articles about the Columbine massacre in the twins' luggage, including a Time magazine cover about the killers, as well as a letter from Klebold's family.

Klebold and Harris took their own lives after killing 13 people at their school, in a massacre which shocked the world 11 years ago and put the spotlight on bullying.

Police have said their investigation into the joint suicide bid is closed and that no charges would be brought against the surviving twin. Suicide is not a crime in Colorado.
